Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 17, 2026 · Version: 1.2
Sorted Bins ("Sorted Bins," "Sorted," "we," "us," or "our") is the trade name of Sorted Bins LLC, a California limited liability company that rents reusable moving bins and related equipment to residents and businesses in San Francisco and the Peninsula.
This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights you have. We collect what we need to deliver and pick up your bins, process your payment, and support your rental — and not more. We do not sell your personal information. Your rental itself is governed by our Terms of Service; this policy covers only how we handle your personal information.
Who this applies to
This policy covers people in the United States who use our website, request a quote, or rent from us. We do not currently market to or serve customers in the European Union or United Kingdom, so this policy does not address the GDPR; if that changes, we will update it. California residents have specific rights, described in Your California privacy rights.
Information we collect
We collect the following categories of personal information, using the category names California law uses:
- Identifiers — your name, email address, postal/delivery address, phone number, and an account or order identifier.
- Customer records and commercial information — your rental orders, package and duration chosen, delivery and pickup details, and payment status and history.
- Internet or electronic network activity — how you interact with our website (pages viewed, links clicked, approximate device and browser information), including standard server logs and, where enabled, first-party analytics.
- Approximate location — a general location derived from your IP address, and the delivery address you give us, which we use to fulfil the rental.
- Business contact information (B2B only) — for office and commercial customers, the contact's name, work email, phone, and company.
Payment card information goes directly to our payment processor (Stripe). We do not receive or store your full card number.
We do not collect "sensitive personal information" as California defines it (such as Social Security numbers, precise geolocation, account login credentials for other services, or information about health, race, religion, or sexual orientation). Because we do not collect it, the right to limit the use of sensitive personal information does not apply.
We do not build advertising or behavioral profiles about you, and we do not draw inferences to create a profile.
How we use your information
We use your information to:
- fulfil your rental — schedule and make the delivery, pick up the bins, and manage extensions, changes, or issues;
- process your payment, through Stripe;
- send you transactional messages about your rental (order confirmation, delivery and pickup windows, service notices), by email through Resend and, if you have opted in, by text message;
- send marketing email only if you have opted in (see Your choices about email and text);
- understand and improve how our website and service work, using server logs and, where enabled, first-party analytics;
- meet legal, tax, accounting, and recordkeeping obligations, and resolve disputes.
How we share your information
We share personal information only with service providers who help us run the business, and only as needed for the purpose described. Sharing data with a service provider to perform a service for us is not a sale. Our service providers include:
- Supabase — secure hosting of customer and order data.
- Stripe — payment processing.
- Resend — transactional and (opt-in) marketing email delivery.
- Vercel — website hosting and delivery, including standard server logs.
- Google Workspace — our business email and productivity tools, which we use to correspond with you and manage your account.
- Notion — internal account records for business (B2B) customers and referral partners only.
- Our delivery driver — the independent contractor who runs our delivery and pickup routes receives your name, delivery and pickup addresses, phone number, and any delivery notes you provide, only as needed to complete your scheduled stops.
As our service grows we may add service providers — for example, a text-messaging provider or a website-analytics provider. When we do, we use them only to help us run the business, on the same "service provider, not a sale" basis described above, and we update this list.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to comply with a legal process, to enforce our agreements, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our customers, the public, or Sorted Bins.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. If that ever changes, we will update this policy before doing so, name the recipients and purpose, provide a working opt-out, and honor Global Privacy Control browser signals.
Your California privacy rights
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know and access — request the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the sources, the purposes, and the categories of third parties we disclosed it to.
- Delete — request that we delete the personal information we collected from you, subject to legal exceptions (for example, we keep records needed for tax and accounting).
- Correct — request that we correct inaccurate personal information.
- Opt out of sale or sharing — we do not sell or share your personal information, so there is currently nothing to opt out of. If this changes, this policy will be updated and a working opt-out provided.
- Non-discrimination — we will not deny you service, charge you a different price, or give you a lower quality of service for exercising any of these rights.
How to make a request. Email privacy@sortedbins.com with the request and enough information for us to locate your records. To protect your information, we will verify your identity by matching the details you provide against what we have on file; we may ask for additional information if we cannot reasonably verify you. You may make a "right to know" request up to twice in a 12-month period.
Authorized agents. You may use an authorized agent to make a request. We will ask the agent for written permission signed by you and may still verify your identity directly.
Our response time. We will acknowledge your request promptly and respond within 45 days. If we need more time, we may extend by up to an additional 45 days (90 days total) and will tell you why.
Your choices about email and text
Transactional messages (order confirmations, delivery and pickup notices, service updates) are part of providing the rental. They are not marketing, and they continue for the life of your rental.
Marketing email is sent only if you opt in — by submitting a signup form on our site, or by checking the optional marketing box at checkout (it is never pre-checked). Every marketing email has a one-click unsubscribe link, and a postal mailing address, as required by the CAN-SPAM Act. Unsubscribing stops marketing email; it does not stop transactional messages about an active rental.
Unfinished bookings. If you start a booking and do not finish it, we may email you about that booking so you can pick up where you left off. At most two emails, about your booking only. It never adds you to a marketing list.
Text messages. We send texts only if you opt in, by checking the optional text-updates box at checkout (it is never pre-checked). Consent is not a condition of purchase. Texts are updates about your rental: your arrival window, driver on-the-way and arrival updates, and delivery or pickup confirmations. Message frequency varies by order. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to any message to opt out of further texts; reply HELP to any message, or email hi@sortedbins.com, for help. If you opt out, we send these updates by email instead. Your mobile information and your text messaging opt-in consent are not shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes.
How long we keep your information
- Customer and order records, and the message log — 7 years from your last order, to meet tax, accounting, and dispute-resolution needs.
- Marketing leads (people who signed up but never ordered) — up to 30 days after they unsubscribe; a minimal suppression record is kept indefinitely so we do not email someone who opted out.
- Business (B2B) and referral-partner records — 7 years from the last related order.
- Analytics data — retained only as long as needed to understand and improve the service, per our analytics provider's settings.
When we honor a deletion request, we remove or de-identify your personal information while keeping the minimal order record we are legally required to retain for tax and accounting.
How we protect your information
We use reputable service providers, encrypt personal information in transit, and limit access to the people and systems that need it. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your information and to address issues promptly if they arise.
Children's privacy
Our service is intended for adults (18 and over). It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16, or from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact privacy@sortedbins.com and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the updated version here with a new "Last updated" date and version number. For material changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify you. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the updated policy.
